#reverb13 // Challenge Accepted

Did you take on a new challenge in 2013?  What was it? Are there challenges you deliberately avoided?  What do you want to do to challenge yourself in 2014?

I’m funny about challenges.  I love having a goal to try to reach, but I never put too much pressure on myself to get there.  If it happens I can feel good about it, and if it doesn’t then I’m free to evolve and find something new to focus on.  Forcing myself to think about a goal as a strictly win/lose concept backfires for me every time.  It makes a challenge a job instead of a simple desire to achieve.

This is precisely why I don’t do New Years Resolutions- it’s a set up for failure.  If I have a desire to achieve something on November 5th then I start working on it on November 5th.  November 6th at the latest.

So what unplanned non-resolutions did I take on in 2013?  At 34 years old, I’m pretty far outside of the self-discovery phase and am well into self-improvement and mastery.

Intellectually, my challenge has been to be more present with current events (I’ve never been a big news watcher) and social trends.  That was easy this year with all the crap happening in congress, crazy mass gun killings, and Miley Cyrus twerking.  I lump all of that stuff together under the same heading: Just Plain Stupid.  But then there are things to feel good about, like the panda cam.  So, my faith in the world is restored.  Thanks Bao Bao!

Physically, I am forever seeking that next big challenge to help me go from here to here with athletic conditioning.  I can cardio it up all day long while singing at the top of my lungs and never run out of oxygen.  My downfall has always been my lack of strength training and flexibility.  So, G and I recommitted ourselves to at least once weekly BodyPump class.  And, after experiencing high intensity interval training (HIIT) at a fitness event that we attended at the beginning of the summer, we decided to incorporate more of that into our mix as well.  HIIT is the way to go, my friends.  Wow!  The gains I have seen not only in BodyPump, but also my cardio conditioning for teaching my own classes (RPM and BodyAttack) and changes in my physical appearance are amazing!  Big Win on the physical challenge front this year.

It’ll be hard to top that for 2014, but since I don’t put a lot of pressure on myself that way, I can relax about what I should try to do next and how I will get there.  I love the ever-evolving, free spirited, let’s-see-where-life-takes-me mindset.  And that makes me ready for absolutely anything!
